PUNISHMENT FOR EMPLOYERS WHO WITHHOLD WAGES

By Peace Wobo

The Bible is very clear and has clearly stated how we are to act or behave in every area of life. Do you know that God has set a standard and pattern for employers and employees? It is quite unfortunate that most defaulters are employers that claim to be Christians, especially those who occupy high positions in Church. I have heard of an employer that owes her employees 3 months salary and will be paying them in small amounts,  and she pays them at the middle of the month, whereas, this person is rich, travels abroad often and is making so much money, a leader in Church. So, the issue is not the economy or no enough money to pay workers when the business is something that brings in good cash on a daily basis and even the employees can measure the profit, this is pure wickedness and there is punishment for it.
Don't think am talking baselessly, the Bible has instructed employers on when to pay employees, let's look at some Scriptures:
Leviticus 19:13 "You shall not defraud or oppress your neighbor or rob him; the wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until morning". This applies mostly to daily paid workers but you can see it clearly that you (employer) is not to keep the wages all night until morning, if we are to relate it to salary earners, it means; don't keep one's salary to the 1st of next month.
Let's also look at Deuteronomy 24:14 You shall not oppress or extort from a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is of your brethren or of your strangers and sojourners who are in your land inside your towns. :15 You shall give him his hire on the day he earns it before the sun goes down, for he is poor, and sets his heart upon it; lest he cry against you to the Lord, and it be sin to you". Verse 14 talks about employers that extort their workers, they over use them, make them do things they are not willing or work more than they ought to and yet pay them so little. It is a Sin! And every sin has its punishment.   I hope verse 15 is clear enough? When employees cry because they have not been paid, God hears them, whether they are believers or not and it becomes a sin to the employer which made them cry by withholding their salary.
See also Malachi 3:“At that time I will put you on trial. I am eager to witness against all sorcerers and adulterers and liars. I will speak against those who cheat employees of their wages, who oppress widows and orphans, or who deprive the foreigners living among you of justice, for these people do not fear me,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
There are so many other Scriptures about this, but I will make do with this two for now.

God so kind, I am bold to say that, I have never worked with such employers, but its very sad to see those who have, how they lament and cry is very touching and sad and that's why God punishes such employers. If you know that you are guilty of these charges, repent now!

We know that sometimes things might not go as planned, that's a different issue and it is understandable but even at that, make the employees know that salary will be delayed for some reasons which they can see and understand. Every person that works expects pay in time. If an employer is not the type that owes, anytime salary is delayed, the employees understand, am saying this from experience. It is difficult to find unbelievers who owe salaries like most believers do.
