“Therefore Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever.’ But now Yahweh says, ‘Far be it from me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me will be lightly esteemed.
Behold, the days come, that I will cut off your arm, and the arm of your father’s house, that there will not be an old man in your house.
This clearly shows us that God change the man in His plan but He never changes His purpose and His will. God's purpose must stand and His will must surely come to pass. (vs.35: KJV And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.) God can never lack a man for His purpose and will.
Eli did well as a Priest but he failed as a father. He failed to bring up his children in the way they should go that's why he couldn't redirect them when they were old. This is clearly obvious because it was recorded that his sons did not know the LORD. vs.12:"Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the Lord".
Eli was a Priest yet His sons did not know the LORD, what a failed father. His sons misbehaved with the sacrifices that the people brought and defiled the temple of God greatly. This provoked God to break His covenant with the house of Eli because Eli failed God. God expects us to balance every area of our life, don't ignore your family, and claim to be busy with God's work, your family is part of the ministry God has put in your hands, and when it fails He will hold you accountable as He did with Eli.
Don't ever take your relationship with God for granted. Though Eli didn't but his sons did. As a father, don't keep quiet when you ought to speak out and rebuke. Don't ignore people who you ought to correct, whom God has assigned to you for guidance and correction.
1 Sam 2: 27 And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house? 28 And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?
29 Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above Me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
This phrase to "and hononourest thy sons above Me, to make yourselves fat", this phrase did not exclude Eli and the Lord equally stated that Eli honoured his son's above Him. This is where the sin of Eli lies, he honoured his sons above God and they made themselves fat in rebellion to God.
God doesn't want anything to compete with His place in our lives. The place of God cannot be replaced by even family and that's why we must carry our family along in our ministry.
Come to think of it, it actually meant that Eli partook in eating the abhorred offering and that's why God punished him together with his children? No wonder God said He honoured his children above God.
He knew that his sons abhorred the offerings and sacrifices yet he ate of it from them still.
This is like knowing that someone is a thief or a Yahoo yet you collect whatever he brings to you while you claim to be a Christian.
God is committed to His promises and covenants to those who are committed to Him wholeheartedly? May our lifestyle or negligence to the things of God not force God to break His covenant with us as He did with Eli. Amen👏
