THE HISTORY OF GAY MARRIAGE

By Peace Wobo
How Gay Marriage Came To Be
We can say that homosexuality and lesbianism started as far back as in the days of Lot as we see from Genesis 19:4-5 "4 But before they lay down, the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, all the men from every quarter, surrounded the house.
And they called to Lot and said, Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know (be intimate with) them." and for this act the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Nobody could live to legalise this because God dealt with them instantly.
In our time; fifty years ago, every state criminalised gay marriage, even the America Civil Liberties Union did not object to it.
The Pre-Marriage Era
In the early 1970s, in a burst of gay activism unleashed by the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village, several same-sex couples filed lawsuits demanding marriage licenses. Courts never took their arguments very serious.
Also, in 1991, three (3) gay couples in Hawaii challenged the constitutionality of laws limiting marriage to a man and a woman. No national gay-rights organisation could support the litigation because it was considered hopeless, but in 1993 the State Supreme Court unexpectedly ruled that excluding same-sex couples from marriage was presumptuously unconstitutional. The case was remanded for a trial and the government had the opportunity to show a compelling justification for banning gay marriage. At this time, nobody publicly identified with gay couples even companies did not employ them.
As time goes on, more gay activist continue to demand for marriage equality which started leading to shift in opinion which translated into policy changes, the number of people and organisation in support of gay marriage started to rise between 1993-2008.
The society was then becoming more gay friendly, millions of gays and lesbians chose to come out of their closet and support for gay marriage gradually increased well.
Finally, in April 1, 2001 the first legal gay marriage in the world toke place in the Netherlands making them the first country to legalise gay marriage and in 2003 Belgium followed suit and so did other countries and today over 26  countries in the world have legalised gay marriage, some are still passing the bill but I thank God for Nigeria and I am standing to support illegalisation of gay marriage in our Fatherland. Not forgetting that the world's standard can never change God's standard. 2 Timothy 2:19 "But the firm foundation of (laid by) God stands, sure and unshaken, bearing this seal (inscription): The Lord knows those who are His, and, Let everyone who names [himself by] the name of the Lord give up all iniquity and stand aloof from it".
To proceed, I will like to ask the audience a question; "Is everything that is lawful right"? Even Apostle Paul in the book of 1 Corinthians 10:23 says " All things are legitimate [permissible—and we are free to do anything we please], but not all things are helpful (expedient, profitable, and wholesome). All things are legitimate, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life]"(Amplified).
