Hello peaceables', today we will be introducing the city of Corinth as well as the book of 1 Corinthians to you.
Corinth was a principal city of Greece. It was a centre for art, philosophy and religion. It contained a number of pagan temples including large ones like Apollo and Aphrodite. The city had reputation for vice, immorality and debauchery.
In 1858, the old city of Corinth (now known as Αρχαία Κόρινθος / Ancient Corinth; a town 3km/2mi SW of the modern city) was totally destroyed by an earthquake. The new city of Corinth was founded on the coast of the Gulf of Corinth. Corinth is the second largest city in the periphery of Peloponnese after Kalamata (53,659 inh. in 2001). In the census of 1991 the city had a population of 28,071 while latest data 2001 showed an increase of 2,363 inhabitants (+8,4%) to 30,434. It should be noted the fact that between the census of 1981 and that of 1991 the city had one of the fastest increasing populations in the country.

In the letter of 1 Corinthians, Apostle Paul expressed anxiety concerning morals of some believers in the city. The church in Corinth appeared to have written to ask for guidance on some issues affecting the well-being of the church and its membership. The church was clearly flourishing in its gift of knowledge, wisdom and speech but they were at the same time struggling with every conceivable sin. This letter contains information about how a Christian lifestyle differs from that of the surrounding pagan culture in which they found themselves.
